Welcome to Cape Joy Wine Estate

Nestled between the majestic Simonsberg Mountains and Klapmuts Hill, Cape Joy Wine Estate is a haven for wine enthusiasts. With a rich history dating back to 1679, our farm has been a part of South Africa’s winemaking heritage since the early days of Stellenbosch.

A Legacy of Tradition and Innovation

Our vineyards, situated at up to 450 meters above sea level, benefit from a unique terroir and four distinct soil types that allow us to cultivate a diverse range of grape varieties. Our old vines, some of the oldest in Stellenbosch, produce concentrated flavors that are the heart and soul of our wines.

Our Philosophy

We believe that great wine comes from respecting the land, honoring tradition, and embracing innovation. Our wines are a testament to the perfect blend of history, passion, and terroir. Come and experience the magic of Cape Joy, where every sip tells a story.

Thierry’s extensive experience in winemaking has taken him from Bordeaux to Napa Valley and beyond. He has worked with renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland and has a deep understanding of our farm’s unique character. Thierry’s approach to winemaking is meticulous, treating each vineyard section as its own entity to craft wines that truly reflect the essence of Cape Joy.

CABERNET FRANC

An elegant and expressive red, this Cabernet Franc opens with an aromatic bouquet of wild berries, raspberry leaf, and floral hints of lavender, unfolding into layers of spice and a subtle trace of fresh herbs. The palate is rich yet refined, led by notes of cassis, blackberries, and vibrant red fruits, framed by well-integrated oak and savoury undertones. A finely structured wine with impressive depth, it carries a mineral edge and bright tension through a persistent, polished finish. Harvested in early April 2021 from hand-selected bunches, the grapes underwent meticulous berry sorting followed by a cold soak to enhance flavour extraction. Fermentation occurred in a combination of stainless steel and French oak (60% new), driven by wild yeasts and kept at cool temperatures to preserve purity. The wine matured for 22 months in barrel, with extended post-fermentation maceration to build complexity and texture. Crafted from predominantly free-run juice, this limited-release bottling promises graceful evolution over the next decade.

CHENIN BLANC

Crafted from hand-harvested bush vine fruit planted in 1983 on the Simonsberg-Paarl border, this Chenin Blanc reflects precision and character. Harvested at optimal ripeness and gently cooled before a delicate whole-bunch press, the juice was settled naturally and guided by gravity into a mix of stainless steel and seasoned French oak. Fermentation unfolded slowly with wild yeasts, while regular bâtonnage on fine lees added texture and depth. The result is a layered wine with vibrant citrus and stone fruit notes, underpinned by subtle oak spice and a creamy mid-palate, finishing with striking minerality and finesse.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

A bold, full-bodied red with layers of ripe blackcurrant and plum. The mid-palate reveals depth and structure, supported by subtle hints of spice and toasted oak. Firm yet refined tannins blend seamlessly with bright acidity, leading to a lingering, elegant finish. Balanced and expressive, this wine showcases both richness and finesse.
